Bulgarian Ambassador to the United States Visits Colorado

On March 11, Ambassador Elena Poptodorova, Bulgarian Ambassador to the United States, visited the Highlands Ranch Public Library and attended a reception sponsored by the Colorado Association of Libraries Colorado Bulgarian Library Interest Group.

Ambassador Poptodorova has returned to the US for her second tour as Ambassador.  During her first tour, the Ambassador was a major supporter of the American Bulgarian Library Exchange (ABLE) project in which twelve Colorado libraries participated.

In her visit to the Highlands Ranch Library, the Ambassador was impressed with the variety of services offered; the computers in the children’s room (all of which were being used by children as young as five years old); the use of technology from self-check out of materials to automated material sorting upon book return; and the wide range of resources available to library users.

Poptodorova commented, “I am very impressed with what I’ve seen at Highlands Ranch today.  Bulgaria has some very good libraries as well and both Bulgarian and Colorado libraries can benefit from an exchange of ideas.”

Jamie LaRue, Director of the Douglas County Libraries said, “We are very pleased that the Ambassador visited the Highlands Ranch Branch of our District.  The Partner Library relationship between DCL and the Dora Gabe Library in Dobritch, Bulgaria, has been very rewarding for both of our libraries.”

The reception sponsored by CAL was attended by Highlands Ranch staff including Library Director Jamie LaRue, Highlands Ranch Branch Manager Sheila Kerber, and Philip S. Miller Branch Library staff member, Suzanne LaRue.  CAL Board member Linda Conway came from Academy School District and presented the Ambassador with a framed painting of the Garden of the Gods.

Nancy Bolt, ABLE Project Director and current Chair of the Colorado Bulgaria Library Interest Group commented, “I was privileged to work with Ambassador Poptodorova during the ABLE project.  I know she is a great supporter of libraries and the role the play in helping library users get information.  She is a great library friend – in both Bulgaria and America.”
