    Established in 2015.

Objectives:

  • Prepare a memorandum on the importance of integrating the Information Literacy Training in the academic curricula in Bulgaria
  • Promote Information Literacy training in all types of libraries nationwide.
  • Support the library community in developing programs in Information Literacy. 
  • Explore and present the foreign best practices and implement successful models in the Bulgarian libraries. 
  • Exchange experience, information and ideas with other similar structures on a national and international scale.
  • Work for recognition of libraries as centers for information competency.

  • Regional Libraries Directors’s Section
    Established in 2013.

Current tasks:

  • To advocate for increasing the standard for regional libraries’ budget, by reaching the level of 2008.
  • To advocate for new program of the Ministry of Culture for funding technological renovations in regional libraries.
  • To insist on adoption of Standard for Library and Information Services of Public Libraries,
  • as stipulated in the Public Libraries Act, 2009.
  • The annual funding for regional activities to be resumed.

  • Children Librarians’ Section
    Established: 2013

Main activities:

  • active participation in planning the continuing professional qualification of children librarians through: research, ecxchange and dissemination of professional information and best practices.
    • assessment of training needs;
    • offering courses and workshops at BLIA’s Center for Continuing Education of Librarians;
    • training of trainers in innovative services for children;

  • Research Libraries Section
    Established in 2012. 

Goals:

  • provide quality in information services at research libraries;
  • learn and disseminate successful policy and practices in country and abroad;
  • support professional development of librarians from research libraries in Bulgaria;
  • establishing Sections’ representative body for advocating the interests of the research libraries at university authorities and other professional institutions in Bulgaria and abroad.

Tasks:

  • setting up working groups and organizing annual meetings and round tables on current issues of research libraries; 
  • developing a training program for enhancing librarians’ skills in information literacy
  • and other areas.

  • Cataloging Section
    Established in 2012.

The Section’s activities:

  • collects information about new international standards and other sources on bibliographic description, authority files and classification schedules;
  • suggests standards to be developed and implemented in the practice;
  • suggests experts for participation in international projects, conferences, etc.;
  • suggests to the Board participants in working groups for developing standards, as well as the format and means of their dissemination;
  • prepares statement on behalf of the Bulgarian library community on projects for international standards and other regulative documents.

  • American experience for libraries
    Established in 2003.

The BLIA’s Board has received a grant for founding an Association of library and information professionals who have participated in exchange programs of the US Department of State.

American Experience for Libraries was founded on October 3rd, 2004 in Razgrad. 20 librarians from Varna, Dobrich, Silistra, Veliko Tarnovo, Burgas, Sliven, Stara Zagora, Plovdiv, Razgrad, Rakovski, and Sofia attended teh assembly.

Rules of Procedure, Key Development Areas, and Memorandum were adopted at the meeting.

Main goals:

  • Implementing successful policies and practices of the American libraries. 
  • Working towards expanding the cooperation between American and Bulgarian libraries.
  • Supporting cultural and educational exchange between Bulgaria and the USA. 
  • Strengthening the relationship between the library associations of Bulgaria and the USA.
  • Contributing to the successful cooperation of library and information professionals in Southeast Europe, participated in programs for educational exchange of the US Department of State.
  • School Libraries Section
    Established in 1997.

Goals and objectives:

  • to enhance the professional qualification of school librarians;
  • organize national training events for continuing education;
  • participate in updating the programs of BLIA’s Center for Continuing Education for Librarians;
  • work for establishing and maintaining a library in every school;
  • advocate for school libraries that provide quality services to students and teachers;
  • collaborate for seeking wide public support for development of school libraries;
  • maintain high professional standards through ongoing development of knowledge and skills;
  • maintain active partmnership between school libraries.
